Sinatra’s top 14 British Television Shows (Part 3)
#10. No Heroics
This 10 and 9 section of the list is very superhero oriented. No Heroics is a comedy following the day to day lives of a group of “B” superheroes who frequent a bar called The Fortress. The series has a lot in common with the film Mystery Men (Which is an often overlooked film in my opinion).
The main cast is hilarious. The main group consist of 4 heroes The Hotness who controls heat and whose main source of income comes from acting as a heater in the winter, Electroclash who can control machines with her voice, Timebomb who can see 60 seconds into the future and loves him some torture and She-Force a super strong superhero who isn’t very comfortable in her own skin. The actors all seem to be having a great time playing the characters especially Nicholas Burns who plays The Hotness, Burns is a great comedy actor, he’s great at playing that kind of not overly confident goofy guy.
Besides the main group of heroes we meet lots of other heroes coming in and out of The Fortress one of whom acts as the main antagonist of the group named Excelsior (Played by the UK Offices Patrick Baladi) He’s like a dick version of superman, he’s the best hero out there and he knows it, basically he’s a cock.
Sadly the show hasn’t returned from its first series so its only 6 episodes running 30 minutes each yet the show won Best New Comedy at the British Comedy Awards in 2008, I just don’t understand how television works sometimes, these kinds of shows need time to grow. The shows premise was so funny that the U.S. decided it wanted to remake the show (like always) for ABC. The show was set to star of all people Freddie Prince Jr but the pilot was not picked up. I would have actually given it a chance just because I crave me some more No Heroics in whatever form.
The show isn’t available on DVD in the states which is a shame but you can import it from Amazon UK (link below) for about 16-17 bucks which isn’t too bad. Ideally it will one day be released in the U.S. but that seems more like a pipe dream then anything else.
At the end of the day No Heroics is a show that’s perfect for Nerds like us. It’s funny, the cast is likeable and the story (albeit short) works well. Give it a shot!
