No it's not Spidey 4 news, it's Spidey Videogame news, just as good...

So Activision has let loose some details and a debut trailer for there next Spider-Man game titled Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. The basic plot of which involves a mystical tablet being broken up into four pieces and sent into different dimensions. The player then controls 4 different Spider-Men in 4 different dimensions who must beat the snot out of flunkies and bosses on route to collecting a piece of the tablet...yeah you read that right.

Check out the trailer and press release below (Via Activision):

Activision Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Entertainment have released the first details of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the newest entry of non-stop heroic action to star the iconic wall-crawler. The video game is scheduled for release in September 2010 and will allow players to travel through four different worlds as distinctly different versions of Spider-Man from four universes across Marvel lore, two of which are announced today: The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Noir.

As Spider-Man, players will experience a wide variety of gameplay and dramatic environments. The Amazing Spider-Man experience delivers innovative web combat and visuals in a world that pays tribute to the classic era of the legendary Super Hero. In contrast, Spider-Man Noir features a cunning and covert depiction of Spider-Man, who utilizes shadows to perform stealth takedowns in a 1930's-influenced, black-and-white cinematic environment.

“Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions delivers an original storyline that bridges four unique worlds,” said Rob Kostich, Head of Marketing, Activision Publishing, Inc. “Each action-packed universe will have its own detailed art design and thrilling missions, challenging gamers to use new skill sets to defeat enemies as they unlock powerful new moves and progress through the game.”

Penned by acclaimed Marvel comic book writer Dan Slott, the story takes players on a mission to capture the magical energy of the Tablet of Order and Chaos, which has been shattered and scattered across parallel universes. Gamers are challenged to battle fan-favorite villains such as the lethal Kraven and a custom, never-before-seen Noir version of Hammerhead, in a quest to restore the fabric of reality.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is developed by Beenox and not yet rated.
I'm a sucker for Spider-Man games, I've bought every one since the PS1 days and for the record my favorite is still Ultimate Spider-Man for X-Box, I enjoyed Spider-Man 2 but I will never understand the universal praise for it being the "best" Spider-Man game. I just enjoy the kind of crazy comic stories that the games that are not tied to a movie get away with, that being said this game sounds WAY OUT THERE! Though I am a fan of getting 4 different worlds and the fact that each will have its own graphical style/game play mechanics is pretty interesting and a definite selling point.

So far the revealed worlds are Amazing Spider-Man aka the basic 616 marvel Universe and Spider-Man Noir, a take on Spider-Man where he gained his powers during the thirties and acts more like The Dark Knight by sneaking in the shadows and brooding with a gravely voice. There are 2 more yet to be revealed but due to a picture of the Gamestop pre-order costumes (which change outfits for all Dimensions into Cosmic Spider-Man) a third has basically been revealed as Spider-Man 2099 which I'm not all that familiar with, all I know (thanks to Wikipedia) is that it's not Peter Parker as Spidey. The 4th seems to be anyones guess but going off the same Gamestop picture it seems like it could be the Ultimate Universe which would be just fine by me as I've always wanted a sequel to Ultimate Spider-Man.

(Amazing, Noir, ???, 2099)

I've seen no mention yet on whether it is free-roam or not but I'm guessing it wont be based on the trailer, I just didn't spot NYC style open spaces at all but hey maybe there is an over world or something, I don't know. The fact of the matter is that this IS a Spider-Man game and it has multiple costumes so as far as I'm concerned I'm already out 60 bucks.
