The Moffat Era part 6: The Vampires of Venice

Since I’m a bit behind the ball I got to make this quick. The 6th episode of the Moffat era has come and gone and for the most part was an entertaining adventure but it had it’s flaws. The Vampires of Venice was your typical Monster of the Week fare but don’t let that deter you Vampires is a fun episode that is more then it appears on the surface.

It's not exactly Twilight

Vampires is written by Toby Whitehouse who is the creator of Being Human, the fantastic BBC show about a Vampire, Werewolf and Ghost who live together, so he should know how to write Vampires correct? Well yes if you’ve watched Being Human you know that Whithouse has a command of Vampires but things aren’t so black and white in Doctor Who. The Vampires in Who aren’t your typical fare, without spoiling things too much, Vampires in Venice is about so much more than Vampires.

These girls are attractive, minus those choppers

The Doctor rules yet another episode he has some great lines that are almost like a verbal wink to fans of the longest running sci-fi show in history. The Doctor also makes one of his greatest entrances ever, those who saw it must surely agree. The villains of the episode are cool enough but arnt as fleshed out as I would have liked (and expected) however Rory (Amy’s groom to be) does get to time to shine. He’s a much better Companion’s Companion then Mikey was in the first series, ideally there will be some more time for Rory in the spotlight. I think there is a lot more to Rory then meets the eye, hints have been dropped throughout, the question is how much more is there to him? Amy has a so-so episode, nothing bad mind you but also nothing to fantastical, other than another snogging session that makes me wish I was in the bloke’s shows.

The Doctor looks quite excited, I'd be to with all those gals running around

The story had it’s silly parts part overall it delivered enough fun to enjoy the episode. I’s rank this on the lower end of episodes this series but that’s not a knock, all the episodes have been pretty strong, if anything it speaks volumes about the rest of the episodes. I’d rank it 5th out of the 6 episodes so far, with The Beast Below coming in lower. Like I said I enjoy the episode but as far as the series overall is concerned it’s on the bottom.

The preview for this weeks episode looked amazing, "The Dream Lord" ehhh, can’t wait!

Overall Score

6.5 out of 10

Yeah it's not real but I really wish it was if only to piss off all Lost fans. If you are a Lost fan, sorry but I just cant get into it so just watch and have a laugh.

I could almost see this actually happening! I'm still under the impression that the finale will have a Sopranos type effect on fans meaning it will really piss them off. A guy can dream.

We are still alive...News Round-Up

Yeah it's been about a week or so wince the last update but things are pretty hectic right now, I'm currently finishing up school and about to head on vacation so I haven't had a whole lot of free time recently but I'm still here with the news that you crave...or just can't find elsewhere on the net. Anyway lets take a look at some cool news bits from the world of the Nerd.

Hector Hammond-Spotted and Snapped

Below you will find a picture of actor Peter Sarsgaard in his Hector Hammond make-up. Big Head-Check, Mustache-Check. So far so good if you ask me, remember that these pics are taken out of context unless Hammond likes getting his villain on in casual clothing. He's probably on his way to the wardrobe trailer to put on some sort of cool costume. Anyway I like the look of it so far and can't wait for more spy shots from the set.

Attack of the Mullet!

JJ+Spielberg=Super 8

The big news out of Iron-Man 2 week was the release of a trailer for a flick called Super 8 to be directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The whole thing is wrapped up in the normal Abrams super secrecy...I am really starting to get annoyed by Abrams, why does everything need to be such a damn secret, just throw the movie going public a bone and stop with the whole mystery thing. I can't wait til Lost is over.

MYSTERY!

Anyway the trailer can be found right HERE, it is admittedly pretty cool but they apparently haven't even started to shoot the film yet so this footage probably wont even be in the final product...a shame.

I'm a fan of most of Abrams film work (Trek and Cloverfield) but I really can't stand Lost. I for one feel like a TV show that continuously screws with it's viewers isn't worth the time and effort, but I guess thats just me.

Racist Stereotypes out of Transformers 3
You know, for kids...

Yup you read that right Micheal Bay has seemingly listened to the masses and will not be using the characters if Skids and Mudflap (aka the twins) in Transformers 3. Say what you will about Transformers 2 but it was fun admit it, some of it anyway, COME ON I can't be the only one who switched off their brain and had a fun time...can I?

Oh and Megan Fox has been shooting some T3 related stuff with Bumblebee recently. She also has been quoted as saying that she won't be as "Orange" in this film, Maybe she won't wear as much clothing either!

Kick-Ass 2: First Class

In case you haven't heard Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Kick-Ass) has for some odd reason signed on to direct X-Men: First Class for Fox and Jane Goldman will be rewriting the script. Goldman whom is married to Jonathan Ross (the U.K.s Jay Leno) also worked with Vaughn on Kick-Ass, writing the adaptation. For my money this is good news cause Kick-Ass was pretty solid but I still think Vaughn made a bad choice working on an X-Men flick.
At least it won't be the Wolverine show again...

He already was signed on to direct X-Men 3 and jumped ship so why take another chance, is the story of the young X kids any better then what he could have made 3? Maybe Fox and Marvel are giving him a lot of creative freedom this time around cause he proved his worth, only time will tell.

So thats just a quick recap, there was alot more news of note over the past week but it's all stuff you've probably seen. Things are going to be going bit slow until next week sometime. Keep a look out for some mini-reviews of the latest Doctor Who as well as Iron-Man 2 later in the week and ideally the content will keep flowing once the summer kicks starts in the coming weeks. Til Next Time!

2 More Ready to be Urinated on by Giant F'in Robots

And those two (un)lucky souls are POSSIBLY Jamie Kennedy and Patrick Dempsey...I'll let those names sink in for a second. Patrick F'in Dempsey and Jamie F'in Kennedy!?! Whatever. These flicks continue to get bigger and add more bots and more actors but the jump this time is pretty big, if these additions turn out to be true that means new additions to the cast are Dempsey, Kennedy, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Ken Jeong as well as all the returning folks like Shia and Megan Fox.

Transformers, Roll Out and Urinate!

Me I'm still excited, just have giant robots duking it out and you have a happy camper. The film is also set to film in several big cities including Chicago, LA, DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow and China. This ones setting up to be a real jet setting adventure, maybe include a few more Jet Transformers so that Starscream can have a sweet aerial battle! Do it Bay!

Expect to be peed on July 1st 2011!

Conan O'Brien-The 60 Minutes Interview

This aired yesterday on 60 Minutes but for those of you who missed it (or wanna watch it again) I've put the Embed below for all to enjoy. A great interview from Conan, comes off classy and doesn't try to make everyone feel sorry for him (quite the opposite in fact). I really look forward to his new show on TBS and can't wait for him to one day be able to express his true feelings about what went down. Damn Contracts...Damn LENO!

The Moffat Era Part 5: Flesh and Stone The Review!

Two Words: Holy and Crap. I was a little hesitant about getting overly excited for this weeks episode of Doctor Who titled Flesh and Stone as I didn’t want to be let down in anyway, no fear of that anymore. This was as close as you get to perfect Who, awesome companions, good support, cool monsters, setting up some mysteries for the future and a whole crap load of Wish-y, Wash-y,Timey Wimey going on. The Moff wrote a great hour and a half of television with this and last week’s episodes. It’s cool to see what Moffat can come up with when he is in total control and some of the stuff he is setting up or the future (or past) is just stunning, I mean there are sure to be theories up the wazzo online and amongst Who fans but the only man who knows what is going to happen is Moffat.

Doctor Who: a Weeping Angel
"I Love you Tree"

On from last week, The Angels are still causing trouble but the big plot point this week is the CRACK in time and space, it finally takes center stage and even though we hear a lot of talk about it, it remains a mystery. All we know for sure is it’s caused by a “big bang” and somehow Amy is involved, OK I’m intrigued. This half of the two parter basically follows The Doctor as he tries to get everyone to safety and is doing a decent job until what was happening to Amy last week starts to effect things and the group must split up. People die and others survive, The Angels (especially Angel Bob) have some cool moments and we finally get to see them move and even though it is simple it freaked me out, I mean I’ve only ever seen these things as statues and while I knew they could move something about seeing it sent a few chills down my spine.

No Seriously...DO NOT BLINK!

The Doctor, Amy and River all shine this week but that’s to be expected, Matt Smith is straight up owning the role right now, he’s manic in a similar fashion to Tennant but he has a kind of cockiness to him that is coming through that Tennant never had it’s a nice adaptation to the character. Amt has some great moments especially when she is forced to keep her eyes closed due to some Angel shenanigans, some good acting on display. Then theres River, oh River you just keep getting better and something is revealed about her this week that is pretty perplexing, you’ll know if you’ve seen it but it’s something that is stated and could be simple and obvious but stuff is rarely that easy in Who, time will tell. One of the major stand-outs this week was Father Octavian who didn’t really contribute too much IMO last week but has a real great moment this week and The Doctors line to him about “knowing him”, Wow what a great moment . Oh and Amy at the end of the episode...OH MY GOD...SWOON.

Strike a Pose

I can’t believe we are only 5 weeks in and already we have 3 or 4 classic episodes. It seems like we have had so much story yet we still know nothing, thank god there is still 8 weeks to go, I can’t imagine what is in store for the finale and my mouth is watering in anticipation and like I said we are still 8 damn weeks away! Who hasn’t been this consistently strong during it’s revival, Tennant and Davies would string together a good 3 or 4 episodes but there would always been one dragging things down every so often, so far we don’t have that problem with Moffat and Smith. Even next weeks episode, Vampires in Venice which seems like it could just be a monster of the week type episode looks thrilling. It may be my fanboy-ness slipping through but I’ve never enjoyed Who as much. Perhaps I’ll look back a bit down the road and realize it was more a flavor of the month type love but this show has a whole lot of awesome going for it right now.

Final Verdict
10 out of 10
Sinatra LOVES Flesh and Stone
