Blackest Night...The Review

Posted by Sinatra The Tank | Posted in , , | Posted on 5:20 PM

-Today was the day, nearly three quarters of a year after the fact Blackest Night has come to its conclusion. I’ve been along for the ride since the beginning traveling down a road that while bumpy at times proved to be a fantastic trip nonetheless. Along the way there were many sights to stop and just take in. Heroes and Villains returning from the dead or in some cases joining them, Old faces we haven’t seen comeback almost like a half of fame quarterback returning to lead a team to the Super Bowl (or in Brett Favre’s case the NFC Championship), Anyway enough gushing, on to the review.

Blackest Night was broken up into 3 essential reads, that being the main Blackest Night series as well as Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. The spin-offs also proved fun but proved unnecessary to enjoy the overall experience although Blackest Night Wonder Woman and Flash proved quite interesting and well worth the price of admission. Over countless issues we’ve witnessed old friends become new enemies and more costume changes then a high school musical. We've had emotional baggage up to our ears and mind games galore. It's all been part of a rather wonderful formula.

In-case you need a refresher here goes (Blackest Night Spoilers up to BL 8)

-Black Rings attach to dead heroes and bring them back as Black Lanterns, notable zombie heroes include Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hawkman and the list goes on and on.

-Heroes unite to try and take down said Black Lanterns but can’t as they just reform and continue killing people all the while building up the Black Lantern Central Power Battery to 100%.

-Once the Battery gets charged Nekron is unleashed and wants to end all life in the universe to bring about a little peace and quite.

-Some living heroes who have died in the past are turned into BL’s including Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, etc… Black Rings also try to (and almost) grab a hold of Hal and Barry but the two get away.

-The Various other colored corps each deputizes someone on earth into their corps (not by choice). Some inspired choices include Yellow Lantern Scarecrow, Orange Lantern Lex Luthor and Red Lantern Mera!

-The corps fight off the BL’s by learning that mixing the various color lights kills them permanently. Lots of epic battles occur throughout the core 3 books.

-They still can’t defeat Nekron and all seems lost until the White Entity is finally unleashed and joins with Sinestro.

This takes us to now, the corps have all arrived on earth and are throwing down with the Black Lanterns. This leads to a bit of a stalemate as White Lantern Sinestro can’t die as neither can Nekron seeing as how they control Life and Death respectively. What plays out in Blackest Night 8 is an epic conclusion to an epic storyline that I will not ruin for anyone out there. What I will say is that Geoff Johns masterfully wraps up his epic space opus with BRILLIANT art from Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert and Joe Prado with coloring by Alex Sinclair. Mixing all of these awesome talents just makes everything even better. To create some of the epic battles on display could be no easy task and I tip every hat I own to the talent involved.

Story wise it all wraps up and makes sense considering what has been going on for the last several months. We get the resolution we’ve been promised while also leaving open some crazy possibilities. Without getting into specifics, the status quo in regards to who is dead and who is alive has successfully been flipped on its back, spun around and thrown across the room. By the end of the issue you will find yourself wondering just how far reaching the effects of Blackest Night have reached, its questions like this that will drive people like me crazy while waiting for Brightest Day!

Geoff Johns has made Green Lantern the most consistently awesome read in the DC universe and with Blackest Night has successfully brought the rest of the DC Universe into the fold of things. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for zombie tales (though I don’t think of Black Lanterns as zombies) but Blackest Night has since day 1 been what I look forward to on my Wednesday’s. The series has been filled with more memorable moments then you could shake a stick at whether it was Kyle's death/rebirth, Guy's becoming a Red Lantern, Sinestro taking the spotlight, Mogo, Ant-Monitor, etc... again the list is just too damn long to go on but needless to say it was more than enough to keep any comic fan happy and now sadly like all great things it has come to an end, but in ending has ushered in a new exciting path for the DC Universe, one could almost call it a Brightest Day…ZING!

A perfect “Summer Blockbuster” event comic that has kept me on the edge of my seat for months, so then Mr. Johns, what do you have in store for us next???

Final Verdict:

9.5 out of 10

it loses half a point cause it had to end :-(

Walking Dead is now OFFICIALLY a series!

Sorry to continue to bombard all you nice people with Walking Dead news but things just seem to be moving along so rapidly recently, anyway...

I've been reporting on quite a bit of news regarding The Walking Dead. It started with the initial news that a series was being considered and then that Darabont was being brought on board to direct a pilot that if successful would get the show green lit and in the last few days some casting tidbits here and there.

If only you knew!

Well a few short hours after the Johnny Lee Miller Rumors comes news that AMC has officially green-lit a whole season for The Walking Dead and not just a pilot. The long and short of it is that the show will run SIX, One Hour Long Episodes that will constitute a first season. One would imagine that if its successful that it will be picked up for additional seasons. The show is also set to premiere during October of this year (filming begins in June) just in time for AMC's annual Fearfest.

It's all coming up Aces so far regarding The Walking Dead's transition from comic to television.

Here's the Variety Article:

AMC has given a series greenlight to "The Walking Dead," the Frank Darabont-helmed adaptation of the Image Comics series by Robert Kirkman.

AMC has ordered a total of six episodes of the series that revolves around a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Darabont penned and directed the pilot and will exec produce with Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion, which will be funded entirely inhouse by AMC parent Rainbow Media. Charles Eglee, a seasoned TV drama showrunner, has also boarded the project as an exec producer.

"Dead" is targeted to preem in October, dovetailing with Halloween and AMC's annual "Fearfest" two-week marathon of horror and thriller pics.

Jon Bernthal ("The Pacific") has been cast in a lead role. The series revolves around police officer Rick Grimes, who leads a group of human survivors on a search for a safe home in a world overrun by zombies. AMC greenlighted production of a "Walking Dead" pilot back in January but ultimately decided to go straight to series after hearing Darabont's vision for a six-episode arc, and because of the desire to tie in with "Fearfest."

"He's taken the baseline road map of the underlying material and just blew it out to the next level," said Joel Stillerman, AMC's senior veep of programming, production and digital content. "There's stuff in there that will make the people who love the comics very happy and some surprises in there as well."

AMC prexy and g.m. Charlie Collier noted that "Dead" marks AMC's first foray into full ownership of one of its series. "With Frank and Gale and their entire team invested in this project, we also wanted to be fully invested in this project," he said.

Stillerman added that the property is likely to have "huge international value."

One Word: GODZILLA!!!

The Big man (er um Lizard) himself, Godzilla is coming back to the screen! Godzilla has one of the most storied, long lasting careers of any film character along with say James Bond. The Japanese have produced almost 30 Godzilla films taking place in various era's (15 Showa, 7 Heisei and 6 Millennium) and I have seen a loved all of them!

I love this Lizard!

So given the original American Godzilla aka GINO (Godzilla In Name Only) shouldn't I be more worried? Well I suppose I should be but I'll take what I can get in regards to big green. If it turns into another bad movie that shouldn't carry the name Godzilla than so be it but there is always the chance that the character can be done right. Look at King Kong, it took an ill-advised 80's remake before we got Peter Jackson's Kong so maybe the same will be true now, the Ferris Bueller Gino will pave the way for an awesome new era for The King of Monsters...HOPEFULLY

Via Comingsoon.net:

Legendary Pictures announced today they are ready to start developing a new movie based on the legendary Toho Studios monster Godzilla, having acquired the rights to the character Toho created over fifty years ago in the 1954 film, which has since become a genre classic. Legendary is producing the movie through their deal with Warner Bros. with hopes to announce a director soon to helm the movie with the intention of having it ready for a 2012 release.

Toho has kept Godzilla alive through two generations of movies, many of which were only released in Japan. The last time Godzilla arrived on these shores, it was for a 50th Anniversary re-release of the original movie. Before that, Toho released one of the Japanese films in the United States as Godzilla 2000, and in 1998, director Roland Emmerich and his partner Dean Devlin tackled a reinvention of Godzilla for Sony, a summer blockbuster that grossed $379 million worldwide despite generally tepid reviews and disfavor from the long-time fans of the character.

The official press release from Legendary includes quotes from the three key players in the deal.

Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary:

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise. Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Hideyuki Takai, President of Toho Co., Ltd.:

"Godzilla is a signature Japanese character which we have nurtured over the years. It is a great honor to reach an agreement with Legendary Pictures, the parent to many a blockbuster film, and we are delighted in rebooting the character together to realize its much anticipated return by fans from all over the world. We are anxious to find out where Godzilla's new stomping will take us."

Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Brothers Pictures Group:

"Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known. We have enjoyed a great deal of success together to date and this newest opportunity represents yet another chance for us to collaborate on a property that is very clearly in their wheelhouse."

I grew up watching Godzilla movies on Saturday mornings with my dad and having debates on who would win Kong or Zilla. I had the toys, the games, the tapes, laser-discs, DVDs, etc... Godzilla may very well be the reason I proudly call myself a Nerd and I look forward to seeing a giant lizard destroying cities again!

Honestly if you've never watched a old-school Godzilla film I feel sorry for you, everyone should at least once lose themselves in the wonder of men in rubber suites duking it out amongst models of buildings. God I think I'm going to watch a G-Flick right now! Also I think I've got a nice idea for a new TOP SPOT!

Please though give him another monster to fight! KING GHIDORAH!!!

Casting Rumor: The Walking Dead!

We know who's playing Shane but this show will live or die by it's Rick and today there is word on who is the front runner to play the lead in The Walking Dead:

Casting is underway for AMC's "The Walking Dead" TV series as Jon Bernthal ("Eastwick", Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) was announced to be playing Grimes' partner and friend Shane in the Frank Darabont directed pilot episode. Adding to the story, Bloody Disgusting learned exclusively that Jonny Lee Miller (Hackers, Dracula 2000, "Eli Stone") is the frontrunner (in talks) to play "Rick Grimes", a police officer who leads a group of zombie survivors in search of a safe place to live during the apocalypse. As mentioned earlier, shooting begins this May on the pilot with hopes of it turning into an ongoing series. Those of you who are fans of AMC's "Mad Men" know exactly how good this could be.
I have got to say I'm floored! If this casting ends up happening then it's just another reason for me to love this show before an episode has even been produced. Johnny Lee Miller is very underrated IMO, he's been in my favorite movie of all time (Trainspotting) as well as two of my biggest guiltiest pleasure movies of all time (Dracula 2000 and Hackers) so needless to say I'm pretty happy right now.

Looks wise he's not the Rick I was picturing but I'm sure the make-up department can manage, acting wise Miller is the tit's and can get the job done. Shooting for The Walking Dead is set to start in May for a Fall premiere. Exciting times...

The First victim of The Walking Dead!

AMC's is making a pilot of the FANTASTIC Robert Kirkman comic The Walking Dead, thats old news by now but its still sounds so cool.

Anyway the new news is that it seems casting has begun (or has begun to be announced) and the first victim of the undead is Jon Bernthal (Night at the Museum 2,Eastwick) who will be playing Rick's partner Shane. For those oh you who have read the series you know the kind of character Shane is and his story and for those that haven't he's an interesting character to be sure and will likely figure heavily into the pilot/series if it gets picked up.

With a hair cut and a five o'clock shadow this could work!

I'm so happy this show is getting made, I'm so happy Frank Darabont is writing and directing the pilot/producing the series, I'm just sooo damn happy! I trust AMC to make a hell of a show considering the original stuff there turning out now. Once this sucker hits the airwaves I will have a new favorite show!

Green Lantern setting up Justice League?

Posted by Sinatra The Tank | Posted in , , | Posted on 11:01 PM

Well if you ask me it may be considering todays new casting for the 2011 film.

It was announced today that Angela Bassett has joined the cast and will be playing DC comics staple Amanda Waller. Not familiar you say well let me put a little from her Wiki entry below:

Nicknamed "the Wall", she is a former congressional aide and government agent often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty. She also was the former leader (code rank: White Queen) of the covert-ops organization, Checkmate. She later served as Secretary of Metahuman Affairs under President Lex Luthor, before being arrested in the wake of Luthor's public fall from grace. Waller was recently reassigned to the leadership of Checkmate as White Queen, but has been forced to resign because of her involvement in Operation Salvation Run.

Waller had a big part in the Justice League toons from a few years back and has as recently as this season been on Smallville (played by Pan Grier). To sum it up her role in the DC universe has always been controlling (or helping control) groups used to keep meta-humans (heroes) in check on Earth. She's been at the helm of Checkmate, The Suicide Squad, The Cadmus Project and President Luthors right hand (wo)man. Do you see where this could be heading...

Kudos for not going the animated route and casting Mo'Nique

My thoughts on the matter are that maybe we have our DC version of Sam Jackson, a character that could (and should) recur in future DC flicks. Word has it that WB is keen to get all sorts of DC movies going now that Harry Potter is reaching the end of its box office dominance. I don't see Waller being in any Nolan involved movies but if The Flash is next down the pipeline I could see her fitting perfectly. I mean WB/DC could do exactly what WB did ala Fury confronting Stark at the end of Iron Man.

In my head it plays out like this:
-Lantern Saves the day
-Hector Hammond in jail
-Waller warns Lantern
OR
-Offers Hammond a deal
-Credits
AWESOME

Maybe I'm putting to much into this casting but Waller is not in any way a Green Lantern centric hero. Rumor had it that there were a couple of DC cameos in store for GL and this seems to be confirmation of the first. Hopefully it all leads to an intertwined DC Universe. Marvel's not making all that cash for no reason, the know what fans want!

Big F'ing Robots get Big F'ing Actors

Michael Bay today announced on his website that he has signed up (willingly???) three newcomers to his Transformers Trilogy and get this...They are some damn fine actors to boot!

The three (un)lucky souls are John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Ken Jeong. I'm sure everyone is wondering just how Michael Bay is able to get such A-list actors time after time for his popcorn flicks. Well it beats me but as one of the minority who actually turns off their brain and enjoys the Transformers movies I must say I'm pretty excited. Malkovich is said to be playing Shia's first boss...OK no word yet who the others are playing.

Frances McDormand John Malkovich Ken Jeong
Prepare to be urinated on by giant robots!

John Malkovich really needs no introduction I mean the man has a movie all about being well him. Franes McDormand made a name for herself in Fargo and has since been in loads including Burn After Reading, North Country and Almost Famous to name a few. Ken Jeong is the "newcomer" of the three but he's probably the biggest currently of the three considering he was in Knocked Up, The Hangover and weekly o the FANTASTIC sitcom Community.

Bay also revealed that one of the Autobots in the flick will be a Ferrari...NICE

Anyway here's the whole post from the Bay Blog:

Hey, it's been a long time since I've posted. Just been a little busy.

Transformers 3 has been going very well. We are going to shoot in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow, and China. On the talent front, we just locked in Frances McDormand and John Malkovich. Both amazing actors I've always wanted to work with. We also just got Ken Jeong, he is the super funny actor stuck in the trunk from “Hangover” and the Doctor from “Knocked Up.”

We start shooting pre-shoots in about one month.

I also was at a Ferrari charity event this week raising money for a hospital being built by Ferrari in Haiti. I announced that night the newest Autobot to join Transformers: the Ferrari 458 Italia.

I also want to thank everyone on this site that donated to the Make -A-Wish charity. We raised $20,000 which I will personally be matching. This is a great charity where they make wishes come true for kids who are very ill. We have had many Kids from Make-A-Wish visit us on our Transformers sets and this time we will be posting video of their visits on Transformers 3.

Michael Bay

Capt. Offical

Also to update the post from last week, Chris Evans is now OFFICIALLY Captain America. So there you go, get cracking and make a movie that's watchable Joe Johnson we don't want another Jurassic Park 3 on our hands!

Meet the Brown...(Harry Brown Review)

Posted by Sinatra The Tank | Posted in , | Posted on 10:46 PM

0

So remember the other day when I posted the trailer for Harry Brown? Sure ya do! Anyway I was able to partake in watching it last night and am back with my review, ready? Well here goes.

Harry Brown follows Michael Caine as he lives his life in an area overrun by youth violence. Harry has lost everyone in the world with the exception of his equally old friend Leonard. The two meet at the pub and drink pints while playing chess, the kind of fun only old men can enjoy that is until Leonard has had enough with all the hoodies roaming the streets, causing violence, selling dope and just being plain Jersey Shore-ish. Leonard stands up for himself one day and ends up getting killed because of it. This makes Michael Caine Hulk out a bit and get all Bruce Wayne on everyone’s ass. That is a simple explanation of the plot of the flick…actually that is basically the plot without giving away all the fine details. It’s simple enough but a movie like this doesn't need any kind of game changing plot devices when you’ve got Michael Caine acting all bad-ass and man does he deliver.

"Wizards chess Alfred?"

I’ve always been under the impression that anyone who wasn’t a Michael Caine fan must surely be a Nazi or something equally as evil because honestly he is right up there with Eastwood as far as Icon’s go. Harry Brown lives and dies by Caine. When he’s on the screen it’s a blast but when he isn’t it becomes the same old same old, thankfully Caine is on screen at least 90 percent of the time. As far as the other actors go they all do their jobs, there aren't any phoned in performances but nor are there Oscar worthy ones. I enjoyed Leonard, Played by David Bradley (aka Filch from the Harry Potter flicks) but he knocked off way to early in the film. I would have liked to see some more back and forth between Harry and Leonard but the film barely hits and hour and forty minutes so I guess we couldn't have any additional character moments for poor Leonard.

B-A-D-A-S-S

Throughout the film there are several memorable moments including an opening scene that is quite fascinating in how brutal it is, it really sets the pace for whats to come and thats not the end of the violence, make no mistake this is a hard R. Stabbings, Shootings, Drugs, F-Bombs we get it all in this one. When some punk is committing a crime you get pissed and want them to get theirs and when the time finally comes and Brown gets with the revenge you cheer (including an awesome scene in drug dealers lair). The cinematography is on par with other gritty films such as this, things are familiar but never boring.

I did enjoy Harry Brown just not as much as I would have liked, I think I really hyped it up in my head to being Caine’s best performance ever without having seen it. It is a memorable character but Harry Brown doesn’t really hold a candle to some of his more memorable roles such as Alfie, Alfred Jasper, etc… Having said that I could not see anyone else pulling off the role of an aging vigilante as well, anyone else and I’m probably not writing this review right now. At the end of the day Harry Brown is a good movie that you should watch if you have the opportunity, Caine’s best? No, but even if it was Caine’s worst (which it isn't) it would still be better then most actors at any point in their careers.

Harry Brown is out this week on DVD in the UK and comes to selected theaters in April in the U.S. Worth at least a Rental or Matinée depending on your country.

Final Verdict

7 out of 10

Sinatra Enjoys Harry Brown

The Human Torch is Captain America...Maybe

Seems like Marvel has officially offered the role of Steve Rogers aka Captain American to Chris Evans aka The Human Torch. Of all the names thrown around I was pulling for Evans the most, I've liked him in everything I've seen him in and he can play serious (just watch Sunshine) so those fearing that Cap might become a wise cracker should fear not. It's still not OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL because there is no word whether he has accepted the role or not but hopefully we will know soon enough.

Start hitting the Gym a bit Chris

Via The Hollywood Reporter

Chris Evans is one step closer to the role of Captain America.

Sources tell us the actor, who once donned superhero garb in two "Fantastic Four" movies, has been offered the role of Captain America.

Marvel has not confirmed the development and CAA, which reps the actor, declined to comment.

Evans' offer would include starring in up to three "America" movies plus "The Avengers" movies and appearances in several other Marvel movies. While an offer to star in "America" may seem like something you don't have to mull over too long, one possible complication is that Evans is committed to co-starring in the Anna Faris romantic comedy "What's Your Number?" Both are scheduled to shoot this summer.

The role of Captain America and his alter ego Steve Rogers has been one of the most heavily scrutinized parts by the industry, the media and the comic book fandom in recent memory.

Evans wasn’t in the initial round of actors being considered, which for the most part leaned to the newcomer side. Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, Wilson Blethel and Mike Vogel, on top of John Krasinski and Chace Crawford, were those testing and reading. Garrett Hedlund was also someone Marvel was interested in.

Evans, who did not screen test, already has a relationship with Marvel, having starred as Johnny Storm, the fire-covered superhero in the two “Fantastic Four” movies that Fox released in 2005 and 2007. There is some question whether fans would be accepting of an actor who already played a Marvel superhero just a few years ago, but given that the movies were not well embraced, with no one faulting the actors, Evans might have a clean slate with moviegoers.

Joe Johnston is directing “America,” which shoots in England.

Evans, also repped by 3 Arts Entertainment, has the DC Comics adaptation “The Losers” in the can and also appears in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the popular Oni Press graphic novel series.

So there you have it, its still technically up in the air but Marvel at least seems to know who they want.On a side note whats with all these guys taking on multiple superhero roles all the sudden, apparently there aren't that many hero-y types in Hollywood.

P.S. this also means Scott Pilgrim vs. The World could star Superman, The Human Torch and Captain America...EPIC

So much news in the last day or so...

Tim Burton to Direct Addams Family

Via JoBlo

Tim Burton just wrapped the wildly successful (at least on a commercial level) ALICE IN WONDERLAND for Disney and now he's moving on to another animation studio. Don't get too excited, he's not making a film with Pixar but he's heading over to Chris Meladandri's Illumination Entertainment where he'll direct a stop-motion animated film based on THE ADDAMS FAMILY.

I know most of you are probably rolling your eyes around in your head in disbelief but if it's any consolation, Burton's vision will apparently not be based on either the 1960s TV series or the 1990s movies from Paramount. Instead the project will take its inspiration from the many Charles Addams drawings that appeared in the New Yorker.

The project is currently set up at Universal where Illumination has a first-look deal (their DESPICABLE ME hits theaters this summer). Meladandri will produce the project with Burton directing from an as-yet-to-be hired writer. As you can expect, Burton will use the Addams drawings as a launching point but the visuals will be all his own.

No word on when filming might begin but it's possible the film might not see release until 2012 at the earliest. Illumination is already working on HOP for 2011 and has WHERE'S WALDO, THE LORAX and FLANIMALS currently in the production timeline. Filming on this project isn't expected to impact Burton's other Disney film, the feature length adaptation of FRANKENWEENIE but what does it mean for other live-action pursuits remains unclear.

-I have a soft spot in my heart for the original Addams Family and even enjoy the sequel to a certain degree but seeing as how Burton is going the stop motion path and its based on the original comic strip and not the television shows or films I'm OK with this just please make Frankenweenie first Mr. Burton...you promised!

Jamie Foxx joins Kane and Lynch

Via Variety
Jamie Foxx in play for 'Kane & Lynch'
Actor wraps up deal to join videogame adaptation
By MARC GRASER
Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx is finalizing a deal to get locked and loaded to play the schizophrenic killer James Lynch in Lionsgate and Millennium Films' bigscreen adaptation of the Eidos videogame "Kane & Lynch: Dead Men."

Bruce Willis has long been attached to play Kane in the actioner, first joniing to portray the mercenary Adam "Kane" Marcus, in 2008.

Production is expected to start in August, with Simon Crane, a second-unit director and stunt coordinator, making his feature directing debut on the pic.

In the pic, Kane must pair up with the rage-prone Lynch and has 72-hours to recover a doomsday device before his kidnapped wife and daughter are killed by the criminals who broke him out of prison.

Project is penned by Kyle Ward, who also adapted Sony's videogame "Uncharted" as a feature for the studio.

Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter will produce with David Willis and Millennium.

Askarieh and Alter were also producers on Eidos' adaptation of "Hitman," which grossed $100 million for 20th Century Fox. A sequel is in the works, with Ward scripting. The producers are also developing "Jonny Quest" at Warner Bros.

Foxx most recently co-starred in "Valentine's Day" and "Law Abiding Citizen."

IO Interactive is putting the finishing touches on "Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days," that Eidos will release in August.

-Never played th game but I remember the trailer giving off a real Collateral vibe and it seems like a cool enough story. I will say based on photos from the game and what not Willis at least looks the part, it seems that with casting Foxx in the role that his character will become a different race...odd choice.

The Hobbit starts filming in July

Via Comingsoon

Ian McKellen's site was quietly updated on Wednesday, March 17th to now say that filming will start in July, one month later.

The director Guillermo Del Toro is now living in Wellington, close to the Jacksons' and the studio in Miramar.

Ian McKellen, who is returning as Gandalf in the two films based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, has confirmed a report from earlier this year about the start of filming on his official website. The site says:

THE HOBBIT's, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in June. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth.

-Nothing really to say here other then the expected excitement over this movie. I just hope they get someone good for Bilbo.

With summer movie season about to kick-off some movies will surely be missed here and there, Especially if it is a UK release that us American's don't have immediate access to. One such film is Harry Brown a revenge thriller starring Michael Caine that came out in November of last year in the UK but wont be hitting our (limited) screens until April 30th which is might in the hot zone of a (unusually) front-loaded summer movie season.

The story follows Harry Brown (DUH) who is a widower living in a community that is crumbling under youth violence and crime. Things reach there boiling points once a friend of Harry's is killed and he starts taking matters into his own hands, sort of like a vigilante, sort of like...BATM...No wait I won't go there.

Anyway check out the awesome Red Band Trailer below as i looks like it could prove to be one of Caine's beefiest roles.

And also how about a little Teaser Poster for some flick called Scott Pilgrim vs the World! Honestly if we don't get a trailer within the next month my head may explode!

EPIC...INDEED!

Boba Fett > Jango Fett=Green Lantern

Yesterday was my Birthday (YEA ME!) and it was also as if by fate the first day of shooting on Green Lantern. I can't say I've always been a GL fan but I can say that over the past 4-5 years (since I got back into comics) that Hal Jordan and crew have become my favorite part of comics. I love the concepts and stories that Geoff Johns and crew have been weaving since the rebirth of Hal Jordan. The gods of Nerdom has seen fit to make the stars align and start filming my most anticipated comic movie (Yes more so than Dark Knight!) on the day of my birth. Anyway there is some awesome news to report as Abin Sur, aka The original Green Lantern from our sector has been cast and will be played by Jango Fett himself Temuera Morrison. Morrison is a good character actor and easily one of the best parts of Attack of the Clones so I dog this info.

Incase you havnt been keeping up this flick has got quite the creative team behind it:

Director-Martin Campbell
(Goldeneye, Casino Royale)

Hal Jordan-Ryan Reynolds
(Waiting, X-Men Origins:Wolverine)

Carol Ferris-Blake Lively
(Gossip Girl)

Sinestro-Mark Strong
(Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Body of Lies)

Hector Hammond-Peter Sarsgaard
(Jarhead, Garden State)

Senator Hammond-Tim Robbins
(Shawshank Redemption)

Abin Sur-Temuera Morrison
(Attack of the Clones)

not to mention Academy Award winning production designer Grant Major (LotR:Return of the King)
and Academy Award winning Cinematographer Dion Beebe
(Memoirs of a Geisha, Equilibrium)

For my money the cast is one of the most solid for a comic flick I've seen (second to Dark Knight) with Lively being the only wildcard of the bunch and the actual production crew itself seems like a cant miss, if anything the movie will look beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing who will be cast as Kilowog (or the voice of Kilowog) as well as how the various alien creatures will be realized, hopefully a nice mix of practical and CG. I can't wait, this movie is what got me to buy my ticket to Comic-Con this year...God I hope there is a trailer at Comic-Con. Happy B-Day to me!

Wii Busted? Call the Doctor!

This news sprang up last week but I didn't really decide to jump on it until now, I think its because its only starting to sink in now how awesome of news this is. The original report from TheSun:

Doctor Who is to regenerate into Doctor Wii after BBC bosses signed a mega-bucks computer game deal.

Nintendo has agreed a contract said to be worth over £10million to create the much-anticipated game for its popular Wii and DS consoles.

And the firm is planning to get it into shops in time for the lucrative Christmas market. The game is at the early stages but is set to be based around the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith

It will also feature key Doctor Who baddies including the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Silurians.

An insider said: "This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal. We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand. The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together."

The game will be closely monitored by the BBC, which does not want anything too violent. Former Doctor David Tennant said the game had struggled to get off the ground as some developers had wanted the Time Lord to beat up his enemies and blow things up. Who chiefs prefer the Doc to defeat baddies using his cunning rather than his fists. David said:

"The video game was quite actively developed, but it's difficult to nail as the Doctor doesn't blow things up. He's not Batman, who goes around smacking people in the head."

Firms had been coming up with ideas for the last three years in a bid to tap into the show's success. The insider added:

"BBC Worldwide, which licenses BBC shows, has been trying to find some way of doing it. But you can't have Doctor Who blowing things to bits with a laser gun. That would massively change the nature of the show."

The BBC has made a fortune out of Doctor Who spin-offs - raking in around £100million.

Matt Smith Mii
Can my Mii be a Companion!?!

So we will get to control the Doctor with a waggle of a Wiimote! I can already imagine some awesome Sonic Screwdriver mini games. As much as this is good news (and it truly is) I'm still a bit disappointed its not on the 360 and doesn't star Tennant's 10th Doctor although all the early buzz for Smith makes it seem as if people should love Smith as much as Tennant, no easy task.

Weekend Wrap

This weekend proved quite productive in regards to my film viewing experience. I watched several films some old and some new but all enjoyable. So I shall now present you all a quite run down of mini reviews. First up the NEW…

NEW

The Green Zone

-Honestly after seeing the trailer who was expecting Bourne 4? Show of hands…You’re lying if you said you didn’t. Hell even if you read the book on which the movie is based on it still must have appeared that the film treatment was going to get Bourne-ized but luckily that was not the case. I mean I love the Bourne flicks as much as anyone much I also enjoy a thinking mans movie every once and a while.

Admittedly I’m THAT much into politics and one of my least favorite movie subjects is the Iraq War just based on the fact that there is so much he said, she said conspiracy garbage that no one person can no exactly what went down and how it went down especially Hollywood filmmakers. However I really enjoyed Green Zone.

All the actors involved were good, special props to Damon, Isaac’s and Khalid Abdalla who had quite a powerful role. Greg Kinnear was so-so and the normally fantastic Brendan Gleeson while still good disappointed by not being able to convincingly play an American, were as Jason Isaac’s had a flawless American accent Gleeson slipped up a lot. Not enough to dismantle a movie but still got on my nerves.

Story wise it was good, at some points things can get a bit confusing and the makers of the film took some liberties with names and situations according to official statements and the original book. Overall though I was really into it and the fact that it kept me intrigued even without Matt Damon beating people down with a spork or some other harmless instrument of death says loads about the movie.

Greengrass continues to use his handheld shaky cam to dizzying effects but not enough to take away from the overall feel, it actually may have been the perfect amount to make the audience feel like they were right there with the characters. The only negative is that there is a substantial quality loss with those handheld cameras and in this day of HD and digital projections I really don’t want to suffer through a really grainy image.

So overall some nitpicks but small problems overall. Story was good, action was decent and acting was on par with other such movies.

Final Verdict: 6.5 out of 10

New(ish)

The Slammin’ Salmon

-For those that don’t know The Slammin’ Salmon is the latest film from the minds behind Super Troopers and Beerfest, the Broken Lizard crew. I’ve always been a fan of there films, Super Troopers is classic, Beerfest is Pretty damn funny and even The Dukes of Hazard had its merits (Namely Daisy Dukes). The new film marks the Directorial Debut of Kevin Heffernan (aka the funny fat one) which is kind of sad because he has a diminished role in the film, at least that’s how it feels.

The film tells the story of a group of waiters trying to make a lot of cash in one night because they all believe they are competing for a large prize but in reality the restaurants owner (a former boxing champ played by Michael Clarke Duncan) needs to pay off a debt. That’s the basic plot and it really doesn’t get too much more complex. All the Broken Lizard actors play parts of the restaurant staff each with their individual humorous quirks.

The comedy itself is pretty standard Broken Lizard fare; you know the kind I don’t really need to explain it for you. It’s an enjoyable movie that fans of the other Lizard flicks will enjoy, I know I did. Is it the bst film they’ve made, No but its fun enough. It’s not Super Troopers hysterical but it got me to laugh, a good flick to toss a few back to.

Final Verdict: 6 out of 10

Late to the Party

Moon

-WOW. How in the world (or out of this world) was this film not nominated for some sort of Oscar. To not give Rockwell a nom is a shame ad in a year with 10 best feature nominations I can’t believe it didn’t get one.

I had been crazy about seeing it ever since I saw the first trailer but because I live in small town U.S.A. no theater anywhere near me played it. Then I was out of the country for a few months and by the time I got back it was that grey zone between its time in theaters and its time on dvd. Well I finally quenched the thirst I’ve had for several months and boy does it taste good. Like a ice cold coke out of a glass bottle on a warm summer day, Beautiful imagery, right?

Speaking of beautiful imagery this movie is filled with it. Using simple techniques Duncan Jones created a visually captivating film. The space station in which Sam (Sam Rockwell) lives looks like you’d expect a space station to look, not super futuristic and not to old school, that kind of sterile white look that films like 2001 have perfected. I actually felt while watching it that Duncan Jones must love 2001 and not just because there was an talking A.I. (Kevin Spacey) there was just a lot of small touches, the music, some of the shot construction, the sets, it all seemed like a love letter to the Kubrick classic. Having said that the film has its own legs and its story is what captivated me.

It’s some what predictable at times without being to overly simplistic, it keeps you wanting to watch, you want to know the extent to the situations occurring around Sam and even as the credits rolled I found myself wishing I could have spent more time watching Sam Rockwell’s amazing performance.

I wasn’t able to watch the Blu-Ray but would love to one day soon see it in glorious HD, I envy all those who did. It’s a fantastic film that was overlooked by the academy IMO and should be watched by all at least once.

Final Verdict: 9 out of 10

A good weekend of movies, looking forward to Repo-Men this upcoming weekend and the sure to be amazing Kick-Ass in the weeks to follow and soon enough Summer Movie Season will kick into full gear…a great time of the year!
