Survive these annoying children and get a Reward!

Basically what we have here is a video clip of some kids who get to play the new Doctor Who game City of the Daleks. This video starts off fun enough with Daleks invading Sheffield but then starts to focus on some kids who I'm sure are just very happy and excited but come off as annoying. Throughout the video we get some nice glimpses of the first chapter of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. Gameplay seems like your average adventure fare, still can't wait for this.

I'd rather be stuck in a room with twenty Daleks then those kids.

A Doctor Who Game Trailer you say?

Sure it's not what I would call Super Exciting but it's still footage from the new Doctor Who game coming this summer.

It looks good enough though I can't imagine the game being a triple A title but I'm sure Who fans will eat it up (I know I'm going to) and it's an addition this season as well you, yeah, another plus!

Keep and Eye out for a Victory of the Daleks review tomorrow sometime, I know I can't wait to watch it!

Doctor Who: The (adventure) Game (s) !

Yeah we are FINALLY getting some news on some Doctor Who gaming goodness! Continue on for some looks at the game and a nice press release detailing the game I plan to play the second its available.

It was stated a while back that the BBC was gearing up development of several games based on Doctor Who and today we have the first news and SCREENS from the first of them. The game(s) will be called Doctor Who: The Adventure Games and will take the four of 4 PC/Mac FREE downloadable games. OK not exactly what I was expecting but they are FREE and the producers claim that the 4 "episodes" are canon with this series of Who, check out the press release below:

Cardiff, London and Sheffield: April 8th 2010: The Doctor, Amy and some of the show’s most iconic monsters will be making a journey from TV to home computers, as the BBC unveils Doctor Who: The Adventure Games – four original ‘interactive episodes’ which will be made available for free from www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho.

These four new adventures will take the form of downloadable computer games available for PC and Mac, in which players assume control of the Doctor and Amy as they embark on new adventures which complement the new TV series.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has been produced by a team drawing on the very best talent from TV and gaming. The interactive episodes are executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Anwen Aspden (BBC Wales Interactive), alongside Charles Cecil, one of videogaming’s most revered creators.

The games are being developed by Sumo Digital, one of the UK’s best game designers. Stories and scripts are from Phil Ford (co-writer Doctor Who ‘Waters of Mars’) and James Moran (Severance, Torchwood Children of Earth). The project has been commissioned for BBC Online by the Vision Multiplatform team, headed up by Simon Nelson, and is being driven by BBC Wales Interactive.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have been digitally recreated in-game, and have provided full voice-overs. Music has been provided by TV series’ composer Murray Gold. An additional cast will portray original characters and classic enemies.

“Children don’t just watch Doctor Who – they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories,” says Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer,

Doctor Who. “Now, there’s something else – now they can be the Doctor in brand new episodes.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will offer fans of the Doctor a unique opportunity to enter his world, face his challenges and grapple with his deadliest foes.

“By developing these games alongside the new TV series, we’ve been able to weave exciting narrative strands with the very finest game design to create a new kind of Doctor Who, which can be enjoyed by the whole family.”

“There aren’t 13 episodes of Doctor Who this year,” adds Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales and Executive Producer, Doctor Who. “There are 17 – four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe: we’ll be taking you to places you’ve only ever dreamed about seeing – including locations impossible to create on television.”

Simon Nelson, Head of BBC Multiplatform in Vision, continues: “A few years ago we couldn’t have dreamt of commissioning such an innovative form of drama. By integrating the creation of these ‘interactive episodes’ with the development of the TV series, we’ve been able to create amazing two-hour dramas in which you control the action. We’ve all imagined what it would be like to come face-to-face with some of the universe’s most terrifying monsters – now viewers can find out for themselves.

“Establishing new forms of drama is exactly what the BBC should be doing. By aiming these ‘interactive episodes’ at the broad audience of TV show – unique in British television, in that it encompasses at least three generations – we’re aiming to encourage the family to gather round the PC or Mac in the same way they do the television. Driving computer literacy is a keystone of the BBC’s public service remit and we expectDoctor Who: The Adventure Games to be hugely popular in the homes of Britain this year.

“Only the BBC could produce such an innovative slice of new drama. We’re offering two-hour original Doctor Who episodes to production standards on a par with the TV series, working with the very best creatives within the UK. We’re hugely proud of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, which will establish new standards in interactive drama and allow families the country over to enjoy Doctor Who stories in unique and innovative ways.”

“Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will offer the chance for Doctor Who fans to visit places they’ve only dreamed off, facing off against monsters they’ve previously had to imagine,” concludes Anwen Aspden, Executive Producer, BBC Wales Online. “Players will visit places which have never been shown on television – and these will go on to define the look and feel of future TV episodes.”

The exact titles of the four episodes are being kept secret for the time being, but the four original stories will take players on a journey throughout time and space, including one location from the Doctor Who series which has never been seen before on screen. Players will encounter new and original monsters, in stories which form part of the overall Doctor Who canon.

The first episode of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will be available to download for PC and Mac from www.bbc.co.uk/docotorwho in June 2010. Its title will be revealed at a special press event on April 21st 2010 – if you are interested in attending, please do let us know.

So lots of good info there but how will it look!?! Well thankfully they included some screen grabs which actually look pretty damn good if you ask me check some out below.

Oh, Karen.

Hopefully the quality of these isn't hindered by the fact that they are going to be free, they certainly LOOKS nice so who knows. I'll play it regardless if for nothing other than the fact that they will act as episodes of the current series. HURRAY!

Spider-Man is Falling to Pieces

No it's not Spidey 4 news, it's Spidey Videogame news, just as good...

So Activision has let loose some details and a debut trailer for there next Spider-Man game titled Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. The basic plot of which involves a mystical tablet being broken up into four pieces and sent into different dimensions. The player then controls 4 different Spider-Men in 4 different dimensions who must beat the snot out of flunkies and bosses on route to collecting a piece of the tablet...yeah you read that right.

Check out the trailer and press release below (Via Activision):

Activision Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Entertainment have released the first details of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the newest entry of non-stop heroic action to star the iconic wall-crawler. The video game is scheduled for release in September 2010 and will allow players to travel through four different worlds as distinctly different versions of Spider-Man from four universes across Marvel lore, two of which are announced today: The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Noir.

As Spider-Man, players will experience a wide variety of gameplay and dramatic environments. The Amazing Spider-Man experience delivers innovative web combat and visuals in a world that pays tribute to the classic era of the legendary Super Hero. In contrast, Spider-Man Noir features a cunning and covert depiction of Spider-Man, who utilizes shadows to perform stealth takedowns in a 1930's-influenced, black-and-white cinematic environment.

“Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions delivers an original storyline that bridges four unique worlds,” said Rob Kostich, Head of Marketing, Activision Publishing, Inc. “Each action-packed universe will have its own detailed art design and thrilling missions, challenging gamers to use new skill sets to defeat enemies as they unlock powerful new moves and progress through the game.”

Penned by acclaimed Marvel comic book writer Dan Slott, the story takes players on a mission to capture the magical energy of the Tablet of Order and Chaos, which has been shattered and scattered across parallel universes. Gamers are challenged to battle fan-favorite villains such as the lethal Kraven and a custom, never-before-seen Noir version of Hammerhead, in a quest to restore the fabric of reality.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is developed by Beenox and not yet rated.
I'm a sucker for Spider-Man games, I've bought every one since the PS1 days and for the record my favorite is still Ultimate Spider-Man for X-Box, I enjoyed Spider-Man 2 but I will never understand the universal praise for it being the "best" Spider-Man game. I just enjoy the kind of crazy comic stories that the games that are not tied to a movie get away with, that being said this game sounds WAY OUT THERE! Though I am a fan of getting 4 different worlds and the fact that each will have its own graphical style/game play mechanics is pretty interesting and a definite selling point.

So far the revealed worlds are Amazing Spider-Man aka the basic 616 marvel Universe and Spider-Man Noir, a take on Spider-Man where he gained his powers during the thirties and acts more like The Dark Knight by sneaking in the shadows and brooding with a gravely voice. There are 2 more yet to be revealed but due to a picture of the Gamestop pre-order costumes (which change outfits for all Dimensions into Cosmic Spider-Man) a third has basically been revealed as Spider-Man 2099 which I'm not all that familiar with, all I know (thanks to Wikipedia) is that it's not Peter Parker as Spidey. The 4th seems to be anyones guess but going off the same Gamestop picture it seems like it could be the Ultimate Universe which would be just fine by me as I've always wanted a sequel to Ultimate Spider-Man.

(Amazing, Noir, ???, 2099)

I've seen no mention yet on whether it is free-roam or not but I'm guessing it wont be based on the trailer, I just didn't spot NYC style open spaces at all but hey maybe there is an over world or something, I don't know. The fact of the matter is that this IS a Spider-Man game and it has multiple costumes so as far as I'm concerned I'm already out 60 bucks.

Wii Busted? Call the Doctor!

This news sprang up last week but I didn't really decide to jump on it until now, I think its because its only starting to sink in now how awesome of news this is. The original report from TheSun:

Doctor Who is to regenerate into Doctor Wii after BBC bosses signed a mega-bucks computer game deal.

Nintendo has agreed a contract said to be worth over £10million to create the much-anticipated game for its popular Wii and DS consoles.

And the firm is planning to get it into shops in time for the lucrative Christmas market. The game is at the early stages but is set to be based around the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith

It will also feature key Doctor Who baddies including the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Silurians.

An insider said: "This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal. We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand. The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together."

The game will be closely monitored by the BBC, which does not want anything too violent. Former Doctor David Tennant said the game had struggled to get off the ground as some developers had wanted the Time Lord to beat up his enemies and blow things up. Who chiefs prefer the Doc to defeat baddies using his cunning rather than his fists. David said:

"The video game was quite actively developed, but it's difficult to nail as the Doctor doesn't blow things up. He's not Batman, who goes around smacking people in the head."

Firms had been coming up with ideas for the last three years in a bid to tap into the show's success. The insider added:

"BBC Worldwide, which licenses BBC shows, has been trying to find some way of doing it. But you can't have Doctor Who blowing things to bits with a laser gun. That would massively change the nature of the show."

The BBC has made a fortune out of Doctor Who spin-offs - raking in around £100million.

Matt Smith Mii
Can my Mii be a Companion!?!

So we will get to control the Doctor with a waggle of a Wiimote! I can already imagine some awesome Sonic Screwdriver mini games. As much as this is good news (and it truly is) I'm still a bit disappointed its not on the 360 and doesn't star Tennant's 10th Doctor although all the early buzz for Smith makes it seem as if people should love Smith as much as Tennant, no easy task.

The TOP Spot-1/28/10

Things have slowed down a bit this week due to some little game called MASS EFFECT 2 but we are still alive and kicking (for now) so in honor of that we have a new TOP Spot:

Sinatra's TOP 10 Videogames (X-Box 360)

10. Condemned:Criminal Origins
The first game I played on my 360 was Condemned and it really showed off the potential of the 360. The story was also moody and creepy. A truly great addition to the First Person Horror genre.

9. Assassins Creed II
I enjoyed the first Assassins Creed enough to be drawn back for a second outing and I'm glad I did. Assassins Creed 2 is one of the best single player experiences on the current Gen, it also helps that the story is interesting.

8. Rock Band 2
Who doesn't love Rock Band 2, hell I love all Rhythm games but Rock Band 2 was the first one to get it all right and it continues to live on through DLC. I can't imagine what RB3 will bring to the table but I can't wait!

7. Fifa 09
There is no sports game more addicting than Fifa and to be Fifa 09 was the peak of the mountain. Don't get me wrong I love Fifa 10 but something about 09 (maybe the fact that I was better online) just made the game more enjoyable.

6. Bioshock
Basically took the formula of Condemned aka Moody and Creepy and threw them in a blender with some awesome powers and a fantastic period-centric story filled with twist and turns around every corner. The opening of the game/decent into Rapture was one of the defining moments of the 360.

5. Mass Effect
What can you say about Mass Effect that hasn't already been said? I for one was late to the game and didn't give it a fair shot until far after it was released but I'm glad I finally came to my senses. The games story takes Science Fiction story telling to a new level. The game is as personal and in-depth as you make it and in my case I soaked it all in and the sequel...OH THE SEQUEL!

4. Star Wars:The Force Unleashed
Speaking of Sci-Fi what could be more Sci-Fi than Star Wars? NOTHING! I honestly don't get the mediocre scores this game gets. It's go its flaws (The Star Destroyer part) but for the most part it's a fun filled action game set in and expanding upon the great Star Wars Universe. As long as the sequel avoids broken gameplay it should top th original.

3. Left 4 Dead 2
Another game I was late to as evident by my review for a few weeks back. Basically I like it A LOT if you want a more in-depth review check out a few pages back.

2. Batman:Arkham Asylum
Calling it the best Batman game ever isn't really a big deal but calling it one of the best games ever may be. I honestly love this game, Game of the Year for 2009 in my opinion. The announcement of the sequel both excited and scared me, if it can keep the mood and gameplay as perfect as they were while introducing new gameplay elements and villains I don't see it failing.

And the TOP Spot goes to...

1. Dead Rising
Easily the best 3rd person, Zombie, Action game set in a mall ever! When I think of the most fun I've had with a game I think back to this sucker.

It's the only launch(ish) 360 game I still have on my shelf because the itch to play it may never be to far off. Running around as Frank West (bonus points for the hero being named Frank!) killing zombies in as many different fashions as possible is easily the most fun I've had with a game since I was a young boy in the 8-bit era.

BBC is playing games

Great news for those of us who love the BBC and the wide array of fantastic shows they produce, The BBC wants to get into the business of gaming. They want to get developers into making games based on BBC properties such as Top Gear and Doctor Who (YEA!)

Via MCVUK.com

After spending years sat on the fence, the BBC is returning to games in a big way, MCV can exclusively reveal.

Via its commercial arm BBC Worldwide, the broadcaster is courting both publishers and developers to turn Doctor Who, Top Gear, In The Night Garden and many, many more into games for all audiences.

No stone will go unturned: the BBC wants to see its brands on iPhone and Facebook as much as it wants to see them on DS and Wii.

“We are open to conversations with anybody in games about all kinds of business models to see how we can extract more value,” said Neil Ross Russell, MD of children’s and licensing.

“Outside of Disney we have the most well-known line-up of children’s characters around the world.”

It’s a big about-turn for the broadcaster. The BBC closed its Multimedia division in 2005 after sales crashed in its boxed product business, subsequently aborting an attempt to get a PS2 game of spy thriller Spooks
off the ground.

“We’ve been reactive to the market in the last few years,” explained Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide.

“There were a few opportunistic licensing deals, but we were largely aggregating and holding on to our properties to wait and see how the market developed.”

The new effort will push key kids’ IPs towards games for DS and Wii, while more long-running brands find their feet on all sorts of platforms.

But the move goes beyond just licensing out properties.

Said Ross Russell: “What we’re trying to do is build the brands here – this is not about opportunistic licensing. If we wanted to do that we would have done more with these key brands over the last few years.”

As part of the move, BBC Worldwide has hired former EA and Yahoo exec Robert Nashak as EVP of digital entertainment. More details on his appointment will follow tomorrow.

MCV will reveal more on BBC's new strategy to fund new titles based on its properties and work closer with games publishers and developers next week.

(it could look like this!)

I could not be more happy as this gets me one step closer to a Doctor Who videogame. I still think Telltale games should get the Who license and make a sweet adventure game. Well at least now the dream is still alive.

Up 4 Seconds? (Sinatra Reviews Left 4 Dead 2)

I was late to the game (quite literally) with the original Left 4 Dead, I didn’t get/play it until several months after its release. The reason I was always apprehensive was that I believed the game to be more focused on multiplayer (which it is) and I’ve always enjoyed single player games more due to the story normally being better, also the structure of Left 4 Dead that being campaigns broken into different chapters with the A.I. director changing various things around didn’t tickle my fancy BUT my opinions change as frequently as the weather so I purchased the greatest hits version of the game a few months back and found myself thoroughly enjoying it. Sure all the aspects of the game I thought I’d dislike were there but I didn’t care because the game was just plain fun. This brings us to Christmas day when I received Left 4 Dead 2 and zombie killing became my new past time.

Left 4 Dead 2 doesn’t break the mold set by its predecessor, Hell it doesn’t even bend it but it does improve upon it. Everything that you enjoyed about Left 4 Dead is still intact, 4 diverse characters, campaigns broken up into chapters and zombies…lots of zombies. So what makes it worth a purchase? Well there are a few things to consider.

The Campaigns:

The original Left 4 Dead featured 4 Campaigns with 4 chapters each (since the release one new campaign with 2 additional chapters has been released). Each Campaign took place in different environments including an Airport, Wooded Area, City Streets/Hospital and a Farm. While different the campaigns didn’t change much up the same enemies appeared in each and they all sort of looked the same due to the dark color palette. The sequel ups the ante by adding a 5th Campaign and all of the said campaigns take place in vastly different settings for the most part, this time out we get a Mall, a Small Town, a Sugar Mill, a Carnival and a Bourbon Street wannabe . Each Campaigns environment have unique features including swamps, sewers, rain storms and all sorts of fun filled set pieces, also each campaign features unique common infected including clowns and hazmat zombies. There little additions but they add to the feel of the game. The lighting is also vastly improved as unlike the first game there is daylight present for me made the experience more immersive as I could actually look around and see the surroundings I mean its not like zombies only come out at night, right?

The Graphics:

The game looks great as did the first but little tweaks here and there are welcomed. The gore has been amped up with all sorts of zombie bits flying at the screen and the zombies themselves are much more diverse, including the aforementioned special common infected there are more models for the common infected and several new special infected including The Charger, The Jockey and The Spitter. The special infected from the first return as well with some visual upgrades. Like I mentioned the lighting is great, the weather effects are nice and the character models have been given a boost over the first. Overall is a very nice looking game.

The Gameplay:

If you played the first you know what you’re in for yet again however yet again its all about the small additions. You can still carry a main weapon and a secondary weapon as well as a healing product but this time out we get something the first was sorely lacking, MELEE WEAPONS! Swords, Cricket Bats, Axes, Guitars and a few others all are just fantastic. I’ve spent most of my time with the game using the various melee weapons because there’s just nothing more rewarding then decapitation. Along with the melee weapons there are also some new healing items such as adrenaline shots which act similarly to the pain pills and a defibrillator which can bring a killed survivor back to life. Like the rest of the package the additions are not game changers but they improve on an already good formula.

The Final Say:

If you enjoyed the first you will enjoy the second and if you hated the first this won’t change your mind, it’s as simple as that. I suppose I can see how some would refer to this as more an expansion and less a sequel but I wholly believe the game is worth it, it’s everything the first game was and everything that it should have been. If we get Left 4 Dead 3 I can’t think of anything missing that I would add but I’m sure the good folks at Valve are up for the challenge.

Also Yes I know the game came out in November and it’s now January but what can you do, if you still on the fence and want a review here it is.

Final Verdict

8.5 out of 10
